2011 Top 10 #5 – Autumn Rainbow

Autumn Rainbow, originally uploaded by tomkellyphoto.

Fall of 2011 was simply amazing – color everywhere and extending for over six weeks. The one thing that was missing in our own Wasatch Mountains, though, were reds. So it was a quick car stopper when we ventured up the Mirror Lake Highway towards the High Uintahs and found this amazing patch of red, green and yellow.

This is a longer telephoto look at a grove of trees not far from Soapstone Basin. It was photographed with a Nikon D700 fitted with a Nikkor 70-300 lens on a Manfrotto tripod. single shot, no HDR.

Of all the many dozens of selects I chose from this past fall, this one has always stood out in my mind for the vividness and diversity of the color.

It was, literally, an Autumn Rainbow!

Rainbow in a Stormy Sky

Rainbow in a Stormy Sky, originally uploaded by tomkellyphoto.

Summer storms and sunsets are a perfect combination for photographic opportunities. But they can catch you off guard.

It had been a particularly dark, overcast evening. While I should have known better, I gave up the thought of photo chasing for the evening. Until just minutes before sunset when the sky literally broke wide open while continuing to rain. It was a perfect combo for a rainbow.

With the ridgeline of Glenwild to the west, sun sets in our Silver Creek neighborhood a bit earlier than other nearby areas. Knowing that, I dashed to a location two miles away – all the time watching a double rainbow form to the east.

Rainbows are great. But you need another subject for perspective. The church in the Trailside neighborhood was a perfect partner.

I quickly pulled out the legs of the tripod, screwed a polarizer onto the Nikkor 10-24 and clicked it onto my D300. I shot for HDR – just in case – and created frame after frame of a perfect horizon-to-horizon rainbow, capturing wildflowers in the foreground.

In three or four minutes, it was all over!

Wild Sunflowers in the Storm

Wild Sunflowers in the Storm, originally uploaded by tomkellyphoto.

This was an amazing evening last August in Silver Creek near Park City, Utah. Sadly, when I returned that evening, I just wasn’t excited about my photographs. In fact, I didn’t even process a single shot. I just stumbled across the photographs looking for another rainbow shot and had a different perspective. Turns out to be a pretty good shoot after all.

The scene is actually just a few hundred meters from our home, looking somewhat to the south just before sunset. The rainbow is splitting the dark sky from a blustery white cloud, with the sun painting the yellow of the wild sunflowers.

One of the challenges with the shot was the light was getting low and the wind was howling. This frame was f5.3 at 1/30th of a second. Somehow the flowers are reasonably sharp.
