The Montage in Autumn
I had been scouting this photo for several nights. I missed it a night earlier by seconds – just couldn’t get the tripod setup quickly enough.
The challenge here was huge sun flare from the left. I ended up ditching the 24-120 and went with the 70-300 to make use of a more solid lens hood. That pretty much did the trick.
It’s also an HDR, but going with the normal exposure plus two over exposures by a stop each – didn’t use the two under exposures.
This is a look at The Montage Deer Valley, an amazing resort in Empire Pass. It’s my favorite place to ski at Deer Valley Resort.
Rainbow in a Stormy Sky
Summer storms and sunsets are a perfect combination for photographic opportunities. But they can catch you off guard.
It had been a particularly dark, overcast evening. While I should have known better, I gave up the thought of photo chasing for the evening. Until just minutes before sunset when the sky literally broke wide open while continuing to rain. It was a perfect combo for a rainbow.
With the ridgeline of Glenwild to the west, sun sets in our Silver Creek neighborhood a bit earlier than other nearby areas. Knowing that, I dashed to a location two miles away – all the time watching a double rainbow form to the east.
Rainbows are great. But you need another subject for perspective. The church in the Trailside neighborhood was a perfect partner.
I quickly pulled out the legs of the tripod, screwed a polarizer onto the Nikkor 10-24 and clicked it onto my D300. I shot for HDR – just in case – and created frame after frame of a perfect horizon-to-horizon rainbow, capturing wildflowers in the foreground.
In three or four minutes, it was all over!
Sundance Awards Party
Sundance is an amazing time in Park City. It brings an electricity to our community for 10 days every January. The closing party, this year at the Basin Rec Center at Newpark. The lights painted a mystical pattern across the crowd making for some fantastic photographs. This wide angle shot of the crowd captures the energy as the Sundance Film Festival comes to an end.
The ever changing lighting coming from multiple directions provided fascinating opportunities to capture a wide array of images.
