Patchwork of Color
Tiles form a patchwork of color on a rooftop in Dubrovnik’s Old Town.
Dubrovnik: Patchwork of Color
We have grown in recent years to truly enjoy time in the Balkans – Slovenia and Croatia. Dubrovnik has been called the Pearl of the Adriatic, and for good reason. Walking the walls of the Old Town, though, you get a sense of tragedy from the ethnic war that gripped the region just a few years ago, and the meaningless shelling endured by the beautiful city. Most of the old tile roofs are gone, victims of the bombing. They are replaced with brightly colored orange tiles that give the city a newfound glow when viewed from the mountainsides above. But what’s most interesting are the old roofs, which display a patchwork of color – tiles weathered from years and years of exposure, and showing the history of the ancient city.
