2011 Top 10 #5 – Autumn Rainbow
Fall of 2011 was simply amazing – color everywhere and extending for over six weeks. The one thing that was missing in our own Wasatch Mountains, though, were reds. So it was a quick car stopper when we ventured up the Mirror Lake Highway towards the High Uintahs and found this amazing patch of red, green and yellow.
This is a longer telephoto look at a grove of trees not far from Soapstone Basin. It was photographed with a Nikon D700 fitted with a Nikkor 70-300 lens on a Manfrotto tripod. single shot, no HDR.
Of all the many dozens of selects I chose from this past fall, this one has always stood out in my mind for the vividness and diversity of the color.
It was, literally, an Autumn Rainbow!
Balloons Over Park City
[singlepic id=54 w=600 h= float=center]
Saturdays in May are perfect for hot air ballooning in Park City. Overnight temperatures are still cool, but not cold. So for a 7:00 a.m. launch from the Silver Creek Industrial Park, it’s perfect for a couple hours soaring over the Snyderville Basin.
Watching the crews work the lines as the pilot fires up the propane flame is quite a sight to see. Put 15 colorful balloons in a couple of parking lots and you have a mini-balloon festival.
As I headed to Heber City and Midway before dawn, there was no sign of life at the launch pad. I figured I would head down to scope out sunrise on Mt. Timpanogos. It was a mixed bag shoot down there with post-dawn clouds blocking the sun. On the way back, though, I spotted the first balloon rising over Home Depot. Then another. And when I turned into the park, it was filled with expanding balloons and anxious passengers.
It’s a photographer’s dream as every color of the rainbow fills the lens. Slowly, balloon after balloon lifts off and fills the deep blue morning sky.

Patchwork of Color
Tiles form a patchwork of color on a rooftop in Dubrovnik’s Old Town.
Dubrovnik: Patchwork of Color
We have grown in recent years to truly enjoy time in the Balkans – Slovenia and Croatia. Dubrovnik has been called the Pearl of the Adriatic, and for good reason. Walking the walls of the Old Town, though, you get a sense of tragedy from the ethnic war that gripped the region just a few years ago, and the meaningless shelling endured by the beautiful city. Most of the old tile roofs are gone, victims of the bombing. They are replaced with brightly colored orange tiles that give the city a newfound glow when viewed from the mountainsides above. But what’s most interesting are the old roofs, which display a patchwork of color – tiles weathered from years and years of exposure, and showing the history of the ancient city.
